HCA BREEDER REFERRAL QUESTIONNAIRE

For Buyers: Below are ten questions buyers should ask of any prospective breeder.

A puppy’s heredity and early days are important.

We discourage buying puppies from pet stores, and from commercial brokers through web sites for may reasons.

1. Are you a member of the Havanese Club of America, the AKC parent club of the Havanese Breed?
   1. Our puppies are bred to be healthy, family companions and our focus is for our puppies to have the wonderful “go with flow” temperament that the havanese are known for. We are not members of any club, as our focus is 100% on our perfect pups, as you will see when you come to visit! We are fully AKC inspected and registered 🙂 We are also inspected by the state and were pioneers of a bill to insure every breeder in RI holds a breeder license and is under the oversight of the state authorities.
2. Do your dogs compete in AKC events?
   1. Holly use to show in confirmation many years ago but we have since switched our sole focus on raising happy, healthy havanese puppies and being available 365 days a year to answer questions and guide our puppy parents whenever they need us! It is impossible to show and compete and also answer the phone whenever you call or return emails expeditiously. so we decided long ago to focus on giving YOU 365 days a year of our time.
3. Are the sire and dam of your puppies AKC Champions and will you provide a three-generation pedigree for the puppy?
   1. Many of our sire and dam’s lineage consist of AKC Champions and even AKC Grand Champions! We are happy to provide you with a copy of your pup’s parent’s pedigrees. Your puppy will also go home with an AKC packet for you to register him to yourself!
4. Are you able to tell me the approximate size and weight my puppy will be as an adult?
   1. Yes, to our best estimation. Weights are based on the parents of your puppy and the sizes of the pups they may have produced in the past. 
5. Do you do any Health testing?
   1. We sure do! We health test all our adults! Even after being tested they are seen by the veterinarian annually to ensure they are in optimal health! Please also click HERE to see more details on all our doctors and testings performed! We do not OFA test for hips as putting a dog under anesthesia is incredibly dangerous. However, we do have the veterinarian examine everyone for hip dysplasia and if any of our dogs showed any sign of an issue, we would never breed them.
6. Have the above tests been done on the sire and dam of the litter? If yes, are the sire and dam listed on the OFA? CERF sites?
   1. Our Sire & Dams are health tested and certified. All testing is listed on the OFA website.
   2. We CAER test all adults. CERF, which used to be the eye registry, (now CAER) is only a registry which reports if the test has been done and not what the results are. 
   3. OFA provides the same information and will state the results unless a breeder has selected to not release the findings.
7. Do you socialize your puppies? What methods do you use?
   1. Of course! We have a wonderful team of caretakers who keep everyone immaculate, their environment immaculate, begin obedience training and LOVE all our pups and adults every day. You can see more details and photos on how we raise and socialize all our pups by clicking HERE!
8. If a buyer is not near you how will they get a puppy? Do you ship puppies?
   1. We prefer all potential puppy parents to come directly to us!
   2. We do not ship our puppies. It is extremely dangerous.

9. Do you provide a written contract?
   1. Yes! All puppies go home home with a contract/6 year guarantee. 
   2. If you would like to receive a blank copy to review, please ask and we would be more than happy to provide you with one!
10. If the buyer cannot keep a puppy or dog purchased from you will you take back the puppy or dog under all conditions and will you be available to mentor a new owner for the life of the dog?
    1. We will always take a dog/puppy back at any time for any reason. We require you to contact us in the event your puppy/dog ever needs to be rehomed no matter the age or reason. We never charge a rehoming fee.
    2. We are ALWAYS available 365 days a year to assist in mentoring you and helping to train/raise your Havanese pup or adult!
